Author: Narayana Bhattatiri

Narayaniyam is hailed as a masterpiece poetry in Sanskrit consisting of 1036 verses spread over 100 Cantos. This devotional hymn is a condensed summary of the 18,000 verses of Srimad Bhagavatam. This book retains the original Sanskrit verses in Devanagari script, but a simple English translation in the form of a commentary is presented to make this a bilingual composition. The hymn by the author glorifies the supreme personality of Godhead through descriptions of His compassion, forgiveness and meaningful pastimes which are abject lessons for the aspiring devotee. Reading about the hymn imbues awe and devotion in the heart of any devotee who wishes to immerse in the subtle feelings of unalloyed love for God. The author had a great respect for his own teacher and was saddened to learn of his guru’s paralysis. The author then prayerfully attended to his teacher and took the illness upon himself and in turn became paralyzed. The author then asked to be carried to the temple of Lord Guruvayur Krishna where he would compose ten verses each day in front of the Altar while praying to the Lord. Following the completion of the entire hymn, he became fully healed by the Lord’s grace. This is the miracle of this hymn and therefore many devotes recite and read about this hymn.
